The Port Is Back & Better Than Ever
2010
was a record year for the Port. Total tonnage of cargo handled
at the port facilities exceeded 4.8 million tons.
In
2006 the St. Bernard Port spent $8 million to rebuild infrastructure.
Roads, warehouses and sewerage facilities were improved while increasing
tonnage and ship visits. Investments of $10 million in 2007 added
conveyors and the rebuilding of the industrial park facilities
and office space. Additional investments of $30 million in 2008
will rehabilitate Berth D of the Chalmette Slip, construct a 72,000
square foot facility to relocate the LISCO lumber company, build
a 42,500 square foot transit shed and build a new structure that
will house the Port’s administrative and security operations.
The goal is to continue to attract larger ships and create more
jobs and economic prosperity for the residents of St. Bernard.
The Port’s original $75,000 investment in 1982 has grown
to over $100 million in intermodal assets today. The earnings impact
since 1999 is over $300 million. |
