2022 Year in Review

St. Bernard Parish, February 13, 2023 - St. Bernard Port, Harbor and Terminal District rounds out another successful year, this time setting a record in breakbulk cargo.

Numbers Representing Results

Total cargo tonnage came in at 8,983,797.997, with 762,072.341 in Breakbulk and 8,221,725.656 in Dry Bulk. Breakbulk is used for goods that cannot fit in standard-size shipping containers or cargo bins, such as grains, minerals and oil. Dry bulk is used for goods that are shipped in large amounts and are highly regulated to avoid spillage or contamination. Some examples of these goods are aluminum, petroleum coke and scrap.

There was a total of 392 Vessels, with the Meraux Buoys (Upper and Lower) having the highest amount of 144 vessels. The Chalmette, Dock 2 came in second at 129 vessels. There were 392 total ship calls in Vessel Traffic.

The amount of total tonnage is about two million less than 2021s report, which was 10.6 million in overall tonnage.

Drew Heaphy, the Executive Director of the port, explains his thoughts on the report.

"Although dry bulk tonnage was down 10% in 2021 due to changing market conditions, the port realized a 29% increase in breakbulk cargo for its best year in this category."

The port believes working with its tenants is the key to keep productivity going. Mr. Heaphy explains: "We will continue to work with existing tenants to expand their operations in productivity. An example of this is currently working with PDF Refinery on an expansion project and renewal diesel project. We are also renovating two docks at Associated Terminals."

With these plans and more in the upcoming future, the St. Bernard Port, Harbor and Terminal continues its efforts to be one of St. Bernard Parish's "economic engines."

The St. Bernard Port, Harbor, and Terminal is listed as one of the most notable ports/harbors in Louisiana* and has been serving the community for more than 50 years.
