St. Bernard Port conducts first cargo transfer in Violet
The St. Bernard Port, Harbor & Terminal District is pleased to announce the first cargo transfer to take place at its new Violet Terminal.
The TEXEL, a 434-foot general cargo ship sailing under the Holland flag, docked in Violet at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 29, marking the first cargo ship to berth at the Violet Terminal.
Dr. Robert Scafidel, the Port’s executive director, and the Port’s Board of Commissioners, are looking forward to this new endeavor in Violet.
“We are happy we are fulfilling a promise we made to the community,” Scafidel said. “We are looking forward to the jobs and opportunities the Violet Terminal will produce for our citizens, and the economic development it will bring to the area.”
The TEXEL’s 14-member crew who hail from Holland, the Ukraine and the Philippines, transferred onto four barges a total of 5,490 metric tons of monocalcium phosphate, an ingredient used in animal feed.
The vessel departed Violet at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 30, headed for Cuba.
Located just five miles downriver from downtown New Orleans, the St. Bernard Port, Harbor & Terminal District also boasts Arabi and Chalmette Terminals/Industrial Parks, as well as Meraux and Chalmette Mid-Stream Mooring Facilities.
